Woodworking for Adults: Historic 17th Century Wooden Totes

With: Jason Breen

Class Fee: $50.00

Class Size: 6 / Adults

Once found in every New England household, these divided totes were used for storage in every room and could easily transport tools and materials from room to room or house to house. Based roughly on several similar styles, this design is easily scaled up or down to be used in the kitchen, garden shed, office or workshop. It incorporates angled construction either nailed or dovetailed that seems simple - until it is tried. Its small size allows for fairly quick stock preparation by hand. Build one or two in a day. Bring lunch.

About Jason Breen: I am a custom furniture maker and studied instrument building and history at Marlboro College. I paid for that education building timber frames and cabinets. Historical and traditional tools have inspired my work since inheriting my ancestors’ hand planes. A member of the Guild of Vermont Furniture Makers, I live and work in Brattleboro, Vermont.

Lost Art of Map Folding

With: Nancy Botkin

Class Fee: $20.00 plus $5.00 material fee

Class size: 16 /Adults and children 12+ accompanied by an adult

Before the smart phone, people spent a lot of time figuring out clever ways to make a large piece of paper fold easily so it could fit in a pocket and then quickly unfold on demand to find a location. We'll learn a few of these and as a bonus I'll teach you Heman's special letter folding technique. We'll cover the Turkish Map Fold, the "Z" fold map, Nancy’s Map in a card, and the Miura – Ori map fold, used in the Japanese Space Program. Even though Heman usually just laid his maps flat in drawers or rolled them up carefully, I think he would have enjoyed these techniques! No experience necessary.

About Nancy Botkin: My grandparents are Heman and Edith, so I've always spent a lot of time in Mill Hollow. One of the biggest treats when I was a kid was to get invited to "work" alongside Heman in his office while he was working on his maps. He let me use his drafting equipment and the drawing tools in his drawers. In recent years, my main creative outlet has been book crafts, including handmade books, miniature books, and decorative paper techniques. I am fascinated by the history of books and the alphabet. I'm mostly self-taught through books and videos, plus I've taken a few classes at the San Francisco Center for the Book.

Sharpening Hand Tools - Afternoon Session
