Before the smart phone, people spent a lot of time figuring out clever ways to make a large piece of paper fold easily so it could fit in a pocket and then quickly unfold on demand to find a location. We'll learn a few of these and as a bonus I'll teach you Heman's special letter folding technique. We'll cover the Turkish Map Fold, the "Z" fold map, Nancy’s Map in a card, and the Miura – Ori map fold, used in the Japanese Space Program. Even though Heman usually just laid his maps flat in drawers or rolled them up carefully, I think he would have enjoyed these techniques! No experience necessary.

About Nancy Botkin: My grandparents are Heman and Edith, so I've always spent a lot of time in Mill Hollow. One of the biggest treats when I was a kid was to get invited to "work" alongside Heman in his office while he was working on his maps. He let me use his drafting equipment and the drawing tools in his drawers. In recent years, my main creative outlet has been book crafts, including handmade books, miniature books, and decorative paper techniques. I am fascinated by the history of books and the alphabet. I'm mostly self-taught through books and videos, plus I've taken a few classes at the San Francisco Center for the Book.
