The Timber Framing Workshop is an introduction to an ancient craft. Over two full days, we will introduce timber framing through a presentation on its history, the principles of mortise and tenon construction, and historic tools. Techniques for laying out joinery, mortising, and cutting tenons will be demonstrated and the participants will learn these woodworking techniques. We will complete the initial layout and cutting of beams for a post-and-beam kiosk by the end of the first day. On the second day, we will cut the remaining mortises and tenons and then assemble the kiosk as the entry to the new nature path at Chase’s Mill. Some familiarity in working with woodworking tools is useful and a commitment to participate in both workshop classes is required.
About us: Jim Gruber, the lead instructor, is a veteran timber framer/duffer. He once cut his home's oak timber frame in the mill in 1979 and co-authored the book Building the Timber Frame House. Tom Page and Chris Madigan are known as some of the finest timber framers in New England and have over 80 years of combined experience.
