ALSTEAD — The peak of water-powered mills, both in Alstead and the state, was between 1810 and 1820. New Hampshire’s population of 244,161 was served by 697 gristmills, 964 sawmills, 262 fulling mills and 251 carding machines.

Alstead had 12 mills, several in Mill Hollow, where water from a dam on Warren Pond flowed into a brook and then into a gorge about 25 feet deep. The presence of the mills contributed to raising Alstead’s population from 317 in 1775 to 1,694 in 1810. Today’s population is 2,016. Read more…
