On October 28, 2009, Mow Kazati and Kate Tarlow Morgan, Mill at Mill Hollow owners, were awarded the Seven to Save designation as one of the most threatened or endangered historic properties in the State. Later that year, Maggie Stier, Field Service Representative for the Alliance, organized a “charette” meeting of experts. “We wanted to find a way to help preserve this mill,” said Stier, “and through one of our small grants, we are able to help the local owners get some good planning advice to guide them in their goals for preserving the mill.” Peter Michaud and Laura Black, from the NH Division of Historical Resources, shared information on State and Federal programs that would apply to the mill. Don Woods, a civil engineer from Clarendon, Vermont, shared his expertise in the preservation of dam structures. And, Richard Monahon, a preservation architect from Peterborough, helped identify the mill’s repair and rehabilitation needs, and what building codes and requirements would apply to a new use. After a tour of the mill, the group adjourned to the Alstead town office building for a brainstorming session about various next steps.
