History and Progress of the Koasek Abenaki

During this afternoon Chief Paul will provide a smudge blessing at the Mill site in recognition of the Indigenous land on which the Mill stands. This ritual will be followed by a short presentation on the history and current challenges of the local Abenaki people and the tribe’s current plans for a Koasek Abenaki Cultural and Nature Preserve in Claremont, NH.

Chief Paul Bunnell is a registered member, Elder, and tribal genealogist of the Ko’asek (Co’wasuck) Traditional Band of the Sovereign Abenaki Nation. He has been its elected Chief since 2008. His duties involve administration of the entire 480-member tribe. The author of 30 books, he is a recognized expert on Native issues and on the history of the Loyalists, colonists who supported the British crown.
